May 19 North Adams reports a cloudburst inundating Adams five miles south of the city. Main street stores flooded as water raced down hills, cellars filled, fences fell, and brooks overflowed. Lightning struck four locations causing minor damage while factories paused operations for the day. Three horses were killed by lightning on Crane Farm.
Storm from the west hit Mount Greylock area causing heavy rain and floods that gouged roads and buried streetcar tracks. Water blocked the Harlem express on Boston & Albany lines at Hoosac street. Cheshire reported large hail and widespread window damage. town population about 3060. Continued on Page 4-Fifth Column.
Miss Susan Minns of 14 Louisburg square sues Chester A. Reed in Suffolk County Superior Court claiming title to a sword once belonging to the Sultan of Zanzibar presented to Captain John Percival of the Constitution. Reed's client purports possession via a chain of gifts, Minns seeks injunction to prevent disposal. A diamond studded safe appears in the record.
The Zanzibar Sultan honored Captain Percival with a diamond studded sword and city liberty, its jewelry valued over 20000 dollars. The weapon passed through several hands, including Stevens, Gassett, and Swan, before ending with an undisclosed client. Minns alleges the sword was only loaned and reverted to the captain’s wife on his death.
National league results show Boston St Louis Chicago New York Brooklyn Detroit Cleveland with uneven scores while American league notes include Chicago 12 innings and Pittsburgh Cincinnati. Other items mention Dartmouth leading the New England intercollegiate meet and Cornell defeating Williams in college sports headlines.
The Licensing Board for the City of Boston announces no new applications for sale of license papers will be considered after August 1 1944 except for death bankruptcy or other imperative reasons. In Dedham District Court Judge Emery Grover dismissed a non-support case by Ruth Worden and Albert Worden amid chaotic interruptions from both mothers. The 16 year old bride and her husband faced accusations of abuse and interference, with the judge quipping the case showed “too much mother-in-law.” The bride plans divorce proceedings.
Daniel Howe, noted capitalist and philanthropist, longtime social figure in central and western Massachusetts, died yesterday at his Brookline home at 64 Sewall Avenue in the 84th year of his age after a long illness. His business interests included paper mills in Holyoke and various industrial ventures in Monroe Bridge and Wilmington, Vermont.
Charles Amidon a Roxbury real estate man married Katherine Kilton De Wolf of Bristol Rhode Island in secrecy. De Wolf is the widow and divorcee of 39 and is the daughter of designer John B Herreshoff. A Roslindale nephew confirmed the nuptials amid privacy.

Goodman Phillips of Roxbury and Chic Gardinier of Wellfleet were found guilty of conspiracy to smuggle Chinese into the United States from Jamaica. Co-defendants Daly and Jin Fuey May were acquitted after four hours. Phillips has prior smuggling convictions and pled guilty to another conspiracy. Gardinier has prior mail fraud imprisonment. Maximum penalty for each offence is two years and a $10,000 fine.
The Department of Justice files antitrust suit in New York seeking to break up the so called Lumber Trust. The action targets ten trade organizations and more than 150 individuals alleging a nationwide conspiracy to restrain trade and keep prices high. Aims include permanent injunctions to halt the alleged conduct.
Mayor Fitzgerald says Governor Foss will face a heavy burden in the fall due to his veto of the teachers' salary and 54 h bills. Miss Dacey from the teachers committee accuses Foss of breaking his word and says teachers will oppose him in the election.
Governor Foss objects to Legislature directing the Boston school committee to raise salaries claiming home rule violation. He favors funding by Legislature but through the school committee. He opposes limiting the raise to elementary teachers and supports all teachers. Mayor Fitzgerald accuses Foss of a heavy fall burden for the party if renominated.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for generally cloudy conditions on Saturday with occasional local showers. East to southeast winds accompany the unsettled weather.
