A proposed schedule change and incidental curtailment of many trains by the Boston and Maine railroad provoked strong protests. Railroad officials withdrew the orders the next afternoon, and the plan will not be enacted next Monday or at all.
Edward J. Ryan and Charles E. Lee discussed curtailment with officials while Greenfield, Fitchburg, Baldwinsville residents, and the Greenfield Board of Trade protested. A Legislature bill ordered the Railroad Commission to investigate the proposed schedule change and its impact on railway mail service. Rank Barr acknowledged the protests and acknowledged that curtailing unprofitable trains would harm efficiency.
Miss Gertrude Quimby a Back Bay student from Audubon road remained missing after Monday. She appeared at the Hotel Albert Tuesday night under the name Miss Cathleen West with two men. one paid for the room and the pair left without returning. A Post inquiry traced her movements to the hotel and Boston and New York police areas reported no leads. By Wednesday she stayed at the hotel and used the telephone several times before leaving at 6 pm to see a friend.
Fire departments from five towns battled a blaze on a bridge between Louis M. Tigh's leather factory and the American Hide and Leather Co storehouse on Goodhue street. The flames damaged the leather district, with an estimated $250000 in losses. Cass and Daly Shoe Co workers fled a five story factory, and several men were overcome by smoke and carried out, but no other injuries were reported.
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court cleared Daniel Cassidy of speeding on Beacon Street and held that prosecutions should focus on road conditions and traffic context rather than fixed speed limits. The decision suggests auto traps may be rendered useless where speed limits were previously enforced, noting traps often placed where drivers are influenced by road factors.

In Alfred Maine on May 18 a letter by Mrs Olea Bull Vaughn defending Mrs Abbie Shapleigh was read in the contest over Mrs Bull's will. Vaughn seeks to void the will on grounds of mental unsoundness and undue influence. She urges her mother that the influence against her pass away and defends the long friendship between Mrs Shapleigh and her mother.
A sudden departure by a party of four Japanese from the Studio house is reported with details continued on page 6 first column.
In National League action St Louis defeated Boston 3 to 0, Chicago beat Philadelphia 11 to 2, Pittsburg won 6 to 1 over New York, Brooklyn won 2 to 1 against Cincinnati. American League saw Chicago 12 over Boston 2, Detroit 9 over Philadelphia 4, New York 3 over St Louis 1, Cleveland 6 over Washington.
One dead and five injured as a touring car going fast turned turtle on Curtis hill near Winchester Square. Victim Andrew E. Warren of Boston dies in hospital. others named include Patrick J. McGarry of Charlestown Navy Yard and Walter Simpson of Beechmont.
Patrick McGarry of Boston is at Woburn Hospital with a fractured skull and extensive injuries and is not expected to live. Other injured include Walter Simpson Beachmont Walter J. Shea Cambridge James M. Bucchannan Revere Bert Clancy Woburn and Jack Linehan Cambridge. Police officers McCauley and Mullen found Linehan dazed on a doorstep.
