The last work by the late ex-Gov Israel Washburn before his death is the memoir of Maine statesman George Evans. Evans served 18 years in Congress, six in the Senate, and allied with the Clay and Webster era Whigs before joining the Democrats. Washburn’s paper will appear in the Maine Historical Society’s forthcoming volume and is highly anticipated.

Suits claiming damages totaling 39000 dollars have been filed against the owners of the Callender building in Providence after a fire that destroyed the structure and caused multiple fatalities.
Hartford votes 60000 for a soldiers monument while New Haven approves 50000. Patrick Rogers 50 a Charlestown navy yard iron plater was hurt by falling timber and treated at the navy yard. Edward Carpenter 35 of Green Street collapsed on a wharf and was rescued and taken home. Thomas Mailander was arrested for polygamy on a Mary Mailander complaint.
