Taunton council voted to buy the King-Richmond lot on Washington street for a high school at 15000, with plans for a new building likely to follow. A Means competition at Phillips Academy, Andover, concluded with Livingston, Sempers Jr., and Perkins taking top prizes. A New York man posing as a D. Appleton & Co. agent borrowed money and forged orders, then vanished. Newburyport’s Peabody mill improvements exceed prior years, costing about 200000 and yielding a modern, competitive mill. Winchendon saw five homes burglarized, cash and watches taken. A Baldwinsville arrest attempt led to escape, with three watches recovered. The Julianna Lode Mining Co of Custer County Colorado moves from irregular ops to self-sustaining work since last September. President A A Rowe reports a village-like plant with engine, boiler, ore, offices, houses, and a large three story crushing and leaching building. Ore dumps hold thousands of tons with some assay at 2362.20 per ton. Output last half of April exceeded one ton per hour, prompting plans for more concentrating works. Supt McEniry notes progress on Mayde lode and shaft, with 109 tons of concentrating ore and 8 tons of selected ore shipped the week ended April 30, 1883. Concentrating machinery installed. first concentrates to ship in June. The company reprices treasury stock at Kilby street and promises to court investigation, maintaining monthly war-claims settlements.
