Hamburg May 15 King Frederick VIII of Denmark died suddenly this morning in Hamburg after a brief illness. The monarch, aged 70, had been visiting the city with his entourage and a tribute is planned by Danish officials.
Daniel Smith 30 of 162 Pearl Street Malden perished when a gas pipe burst sent a wall of flame 20 feet high into an Eastern Avenue trench. Firemen battled nearly an hour as two co workers suffered severe burns and twelve firefighters were overcome.
The church rites were performed by Rev George O Connor of Sacred Heart Church as air was supplied via a garden hose. Twelve firemen were overcome during the incident. Continued on Page 5 Fifth Column.
California results show Theodore Roosevelt ahead in the preferential presidential primary with 26 722 votes to Taft 16 303 La Follette 9 954 Clark 5 974 and Wilson 2 504 from 583 of 3 700 precincts. San Francisco County returns indicate Roosevelt 10 387 Taft 8 416 La Follette 4 937 Clark 3 805 Wilson 1 642.
In San Francisco the Taft managers saw a close vote as 66 precincts reported Roosevelt 6281 Taft 4285 La Follette 2572 Clark 1913 Wilson 823. Roosevelt reportedly carried every other district with strong interior county support. Women voters showed high participation and all 26 delegates elected were chosen at large and bound by the popular choice.
Paris reports the final collapse of France's famed bandit gang after an eight hour assault. Leader Octave Garnier and accomplice Vallet died when melinite charges detonated under their Nogent sur Marne villa. Five policemen wounded.
In the American League Boston defeated St. Louis 6 to 5 and Chicago beat Philadelphia 7 to 0 while Cleveland edged Washington 3 to 2 and Detroit toppled New York 5 to 1. In the National League Chicago won 2 to 0 over Philadelphia and St. Louis crushed Brooklyn 6 to 0 with New York at Pittsburg and Boston at Cincinnati postponed by rain. Somerville High defeated Malden High 2 to 0 and Boston Latin beat Quincy High to . Al Bridwell of the Braves may never be again. New York referee must answer for giving decision.
King Frederick VIII born June 3 1843 ascended Danish throne January 29 1906 succeeding Christian IX. Brother of Alexandra Queen Mother of Britain and Dowager Empress of Russia, and uncle to Haakon VII of Norway. Known in the U S for welcoming Dr Frederick A Cook after his Arctic pole claim.
The Railroad Commission yesterday shattered the New Haven trolley merger plan by blocking the bill. This blow weakens the New Haven at the State House and threatens the Boston and Maine holding company merger. Continued on Page 4-Third Column.
Ray MacKinnon, 23, an employee of the Waltham Watch Company, drowned after the canoe he and Ralph Gilcrist were paddling capsized behind the factory on the Charles River. The two exchanged seats during the outing. the incident occurred this evening.
Forecasts for Boston and New England show unsettled conditions Wednesday with showers possible Thursday night. Moderate south winds accompany the expected weather pattern across the region.

Clarence V T Richeson slept in the death house awaiting execution for the murder of Avis Linnell. Governor Foss will not refer the case to the council today and Richeson likely will be dead before the council meets a week hence. He was moved from the Charles street jail to state prison in the afternoon and dressed in the death suit. Guards described his fear and distress as he entered the death house, with attorney Morse arriving after the transfer.
