May Century Echoes in a Poetic Mood
The speaker cites May’s blue sky and spring’s color to set a mood of gentle sadness. They vow to read only pitiful tales today, delaying humor until clouds gather. Chaucer and Shakespeare anchor the contrast as Hamlet and Ophelia’s tragic bond is mournfully invoked amid spring’s sensuous imagery.

Electric Locomotives Poised to Supplant Steam on Railroads
The Belt Railroad of Baltimore has just contracted with Thomson-Houston for a mile and a half of electric motive power at a cost of about 300,000 dollars to equip its tunnel line. A 500 horse power electric locomotive is being built in Lynn to replace steam on main lines for passenger and baggage service. The Baltimore tunnel line marks the first major use of electric propulsion on a main railroad, prompted by ventilation problems from smoke. Engineers and railroad heads nationwide are studying electro m otive developments and estimating the cost of a full shift from steam to electric power.
