Thomas H Drew 19 was locked up on a shooting charge after a quarrel at a Stanhope Street stable. Joseph Kennedy 30 was wounded in the abdomen and rushed to City hospital. Drew says the shooting was in self defense and witnesses support his account.
A rapid fire started in unoccupied sheep sheds on Western avenue near Market street in Brighton yesterday afternoon. Wind-driven embers ignited five acres of homes destroying two double tenements and another house. Five families became homeless and a kennel with 125 dogs burned. Damages cited at about $30,000. Names of affected residents listed. most damage from water.
At Exeter station near Reading Pennsylvania a collision between the Reading express and a Harrisburg special carrying excursionists from the Hartranft monument event caused at least 25 deaths and about 60 injuries. Eight bodies were brought to the city and many more are trapped under wreckage as hospitals prepare to receive the wounded. Investigators and coroners begin examinations amid widespread shock.
