A preliminary inquiry in New Haven disclosed that L Morey, an old railroad employee left to flag southbound No 601, failed to follow instructions and has been discharged. Brakeman Ganbey, with a broken rib, is recovering and progressing well.
In Paris on May 10 Sir Charles Russell for Great Britain opened the Behring Sea Tribunal proceedings. The court heard praise and critique of US counsel Carter and Coudert while Russell disputed several American legal propositions and highlighted concerns over Alaska's seals and the law governing pelagic sealing. The session included remarks by Baron de Courcel and US arbitrators Harlan and Morgan, plus counsel Phelps on Alaska’s purchase.
The Boston City Council joint committee announced no balloon ascension for the Fourth of July. Tickets will be limited to children, and the balloon funds were reallocated to other events. Flames confined to the second and fourth floors with significant water damage. estimated loss about $10,000. The brick four story building dating from 1878 carries $10,000 insurance on the building and $16,000 on stock and machinery. Fire Chief Casey led a rapid response with a second alarm. repairs will be made promptly.
A midnight fire on North street 87 39 41 injures Edgar Curtis who fell thirty feet while exiting from the third floor. Lyons Sworiski Corwin Cohen Bartkiewicz Splitt Kowalski and Squire Co. occupy floors and the blaze damages the structure with total losses around 2700, building owner John P. Squire.
Chicopee Falls Savings Bank was robbed around 11 am with $160 taken from the money box. About $850 remained in the bottom drawer and $400 in the safe, while the rest had been deposited elsewhere. A man lingered at the door distracting Treasurer Henry J. Boyd as a second stranger rifled the drawer and then both fled toward Springfield.
In the West Newbury arson case W S Dearborn was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for burning J S Addison's residence and causing two deaths. O H Hubbell is acquitted for turning State's evidence and confessing his role, claiming he believed no one was inside. Dearborn and Hubbell had previously pleaded not guilty.
Salem residents endure a hot day with 86 degrees in the shade. Mothers bring out baby carriages stored for months and parade infants along Essex street while the usual beverage remains unreachable sixteen miles away.
Lynn May 10 The Lynn High School battalion selected Privates W D Sargent and W B Dennis from English High and Sergeant Harry T Summers with Corporal Raymond T Parke from Classical High to compete in the individual prize drill at Malden May 20. The battalion will parade and banquet Friday.
The Father Mathew T A Society buys C F Coburn property on Lowell Street for 4000 dollars. Formerly Upton's Hall, it has housed manufacturing uses. The town will remove the third floor, convert the second floor to dancing space, build a stage, and have the building ready for occupancy by October 1.
