Tufts College Club of Boston diners hear about cash and pledges nearing 2000 toward a 50000 fund to place Tufts on a self sustaining basis. Dr William L Hooper says two gifts 2700 and 5000 are assured if 42500 more is pledged by July 1. Alumni response tallies 12500 from 122 donors with 1100 alumni yet to respond to reach 27500 more if needed.

Man Charged in Swanton Death as Defense Opens

In St Albans Vermont on May 9 the trial of Julius Wells of Swanton continued with the defense calling Dr. Whitney who found arsenic traces in vegetables from the Wells home. Earlier Mrs. Ladue testified Wells urged framing Mrs Wells as insane to aid their defense. detectives Rose and Thurman testified about Wells claiming six prior killings.

Poison evidence in Wells case referenced by state witness

The witness was Dr. C. F. Whitney of the State laboratory at Burlington who had testified for the State that he found poison enough to kill 50 or 60 persons in a box alleged to have been sent to Mrs. Wells by the accused.

Fire Charred Block In Lawrence Burns Two Buildings

A six tenement block in the West and Bradford streets area caught fire early today. Occupants were rescued with difficulty as the fire destroyed the block and a nearby carriage factory. The loss totaled 25000 dollars, centered on the Frank E. Snow owned factory.
