The Underwood tariff bill passed the House by 281 to 139 amid a party pitched victory. Five Democrats opposed, two Republicans supported, four Progressives backed it, 14 opposed, and one independent Progressive sided with the majority. A Senate showdown looms with a close fight anticipated.
George W. Coleman, convicted of looting National City Bank of Cambridge, has spent three weeks in Boston for testimony before Judge Harris. He treats the inquiry as a vacation, dining and theater parties included, with Cambridge jail available as lodging though not under jail custody.
Speaker Clark’s loud announcement signals success as Democrats raise a stuffed donkey in the chamber. The bill moves to the Senate after a month of study and House adjourns in three day blocks through June 1. Senate finance and House wags committees prepare for next month.
In Baltimore May 8 a dinner was held for Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan hosted by Charlies H. Grasty with A. Mitchell Palmer as guest speaker. Bryan credited President Wilson for his successes and stated he owed all to Wilson and that Wilson’s leadership would prevail where he could not.
Thomas A. Niland of East Boston testified before the Ways and Means committee at the State House that an agent of the Boston Elevated Railway offered two men money to testify that street car service was good. He read letters from Dorchester citizens claiming they were offered payment to testify in the company's favor.
Mr Niland told a city committee that two men in Dorchester are not for sale and will read their statements. He pressed for openness of the elevated line company books and warned against overcrowded streetcars in the city.

A flurry of blazes and a false alarm kept Boston firefighters busy between 4:15 and 8:15 PM with one two alarm fire, four small fires, three grass fires, and a major incident at 339 Washington Street. A later two Pullman cars blaze in the Boston and Albany yards at 10:30 PM followed. Early morning Roxbury fire destroyed 10 buildings before 4 AM. Continued on Page 8.

About 5000 conductors motormen and other Boston Elevated employees attended three mammoth Union meetings in Lawrence Encampment Hall 724 Washington Street. Sessions occurred in the morning early evening and after midnight with several hundred women among the attendees.
Members report friendly conferences on wage increases and working conditions with no definite results yet. The union aims to avoid extended arbitration as negotiations progress. Last night it joined Cambridge Somerville Chelsea Malden Central Labor unions, aligning with workers in those districts. previously it was part of the Boston Central Labor Union.
The Express reports police seized a bundle of love letters during suf fragette raids. The letters were addressed by a Socialist member of Parliament to a prominent militant.

Trunk straps slippers and paddles help quell a Greater Boston schoolboy rebellion as police truancy officers headmasters and teachers stamp out the trouble. Stern mothers and fathers in the home delivered the final blow ending the strike though South Boston groups with Roxbury and Dorchester delegations staged a last attack on South Boston schools.
Despite 77 officers guarding City Point schools, several Lincoln School windows were smashed by boys. Two youths were arrested. Guy Barber, 6, was taken to Station 12 with two officers nearby, and Alphonse Lacey of Dorchester was led to Station 6 near Bigelow School after the night of vandalism. Four hundred Japanese residents of Sonora State offered their services in arms to insurgent Governor L. I. Pesqueira, a coded telegram reported in Douglas Arizona. The offer was refused as the governor said Mexicans alone should participate in the struggle.
Fifteen Japanese formed a committee that called on the Governor at Hermosillo the state capital. They said 400 Japanese were already armed and claimed to be all residents of the state, mostly farmers and mechanics. They offered to furnish ammunition for a time, but the Governor declined the offer citing alienship of the troops.
