Two desperate burglars jailed for the May Superior Court sitting at Newburyport escaped by sawing their cells at 1 30 this morning. Authorities believe they fled by a morning train across 200 yards from the prison aided by confederates who provided clothing to replace prison garb.
Mrs. William Thaw through her attorney favors her son Harry K. Thaw’s release from Matteawan. A writ of habeas corpus will be argued tomorrow morning before Judge Morschauser in Poughkeepsie.
Fire destroyed the Aveline Hotel in Fort Wayne Indiana at 3 AM injuring and killing many. Firemen militia and police search the ruins for victims with about twenty presumed dead and $150000 in losses reported. Eight bodies recovered were identified as rescue efforts continue.
Escaped prisoners George Rogers and James Franklin both 26 of Lynn were held for burglary. They escaped from cells 7 and 8 in the new jail section after cutting lower bars to crawl through 7 by 11 and 7 by 13 inch openings. Police alerted, searches conducted, and other agencies notified.
Colonel Bartlett reports Mrs William Thaw outlines her view on her son's Matteawan detention. He says she is conscientious and believes he is sane now. She has never reconciled to detention and wishes him to accompany her to Europe.
Miss Mary McKee a 25 year old domestic died after being struck by an inward-bound Boston and Worcester car at Boylston street and Fisher avenue Brookline. She was hurled 20 feet struck a fence and run over at the tracks. Her left leg was amputated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Continued on page 2 fourth column.
Mrs Laura Earley sues Miss C A Leavitt alleging her husband Dr Edgar Earley abandoned her for Leavitt. Leavitt, daughter of late dentist Dr William Leavitt, moved from Adams Street to a Bedford Street estate and now shares a Lexington house with Earley. The case references estate details and dates from 1907 onward.
Mrs Earley claims her former servant, 15 years her junior, pursued Miss Leavitt while Earley coached her father’s coachman. Earley left Lexington and his wife, running the stock farm alone, seeks $30,000 in damages. Domestic troubles began ten years ago according to Mrs Earley.
Edward R. Bostwick asks District Attorney George S. Taft to investigate the death of his sister Mrs. Attie Maud Bostwick Hall who died February 29 at 468 Park Avenue. Officials weigh exhuming the body after conflicting accounts and no autopsy was performed.
The hotel fire left no reliable method to identify all missing as several people are confirmed dead including R. S. Johnson from Pana and N. M. Hirsch of New York. Others named are J. B. Miller of Sheboygan, W. A. Pitcher of Fort Wayne, J. E. Ellis of Chicago, and Devine of Philadelphia plus a list of companions and unidentifiable men.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair weather on Monday with light variable winds, followed by increasing cloudiness Tuesday and a chance of rain later Tuesday. Washington reports New England and eastern New York will have fair conditions Monday and Tuesday with light west winds.
