After 29 years as superintendent, Dr. George H. M. Rowe is forced to step down due to a grave breakdown. He leaves the hospital for prolonged rest and is expected to be away for many months before possible return.
Pending Dr. Rowe's return or retirement rumors, Dr. J H McCollom longtime head of contagious diseases is named acting superintendent by trustees. Rowe collapsed after a period of intense work and will take an indefinite vacation, with officials denying rumors of resignation.
In Pittsburg Pennsylvania May 1 a sensational express car robbery on the St Louis line near Pittsburg led to a large loot that escaped into the hills. The Adams Express Company says the money taken is small though strong indications point to as much as 100000 dollars. Two large consignments of cut diamonds from a Pittsburg firm to a Columbus firm are missing and may total 50000 dollars.
Charles W. Morse and associates turned over nearly 250000 in cash and securities to Charles A. Hanna the bank receiver to settle about 500000 in claims against Morse. Funds were provided by New England friends led by Eugene P. Carver after month of negotiations.
New York May 1 Bishop Potter's condition improves with Dr Janvrin stating the affair is very satisfactory and that he should be strong enough to be out very soon.
The speaker praises women workers clubs as a middle path between drudgery and hedonism. He notes some people focus only on work or only on amusement and argues clubs serve social and intellectual betterment, not as the end of life.
Six hundred working girls from New England gathered in Washington as part of the National League of Women Workers. The convention was reportedly underway but effectively managed by about twenty officers. The group sought an enjoyable outing and indeed had a good time in the capital.
About 50 girls hail from Boston with another 200 from Massachusetts towns. The Boston group is led by Edith M. Howes of Marlboro Street, president of the Massachusetts Association, assisted by O M E Rowe and Julia Little, both Boston members of the national executive board, and Harriet M Laughlin, national treasurer, with Emily G. May 1 1925 New York Catholic celebration culminates in a parade of clergy and laymen led by Cardinal Logue Gibbons and Farley. About forty thousand participate with review at St Patrick's Cathedral and a grand stand for 8000. Business districts close for day. Tickets issued with etiquette note ladies to wear small hats.
Frank Adams, 40, of Charlestown, was knocked down and dragged yesterday on the Chelsea Bridge. He is in critical condition at Relief Hospital with serious injuries.
A hurricane driven gale drove the four masted German ship Peter Rickmers aground ten miles west of Fire Island. Her crew of 40 fights the sea as two life saving stations and about a hundred volunteers attempt a rescue.
The Rickmers lies beyond reach of the breeches buoy gun and life boats. Combers throw back every lifeboat attempt while Mohawk and wrecking tug I J Merritt stand by three miles off unable to close due to high seas and 50 mph wind. Rescuers anticipate a lull to renew efforts.
The Boston Nationals capture the opening game of a Brooklyn series on the South End grounds. A grand ninth inning rally sparked the victory as Boston Americans lost in Philadelphia 5 to 4 in 11 innings. New England Baseball League opened yesterday. Andover contends for Harvard track meet at Stadium today and Cornell football schedule is made public.
In Lakewood on May 1, reports say former President Grover Cleveland is in exceedingly grave condition with no official confirmation of cancer. Dr. Joseph D. Bryant, his longtime physician, withheld specifics while noting the illness is very serious and Mrs. Cleveland is greatly worried.
In Washington on May 1 Quentin Roosevelt youngest son of the President made his first professional stage appearance during a Kellar and Thurston show at the Columbia Theatre. The seven year old Miss Florence Dixon selected Quentin as her assistant for the egg trick and he collected eggs from the magician’s hat. He seemed delighted repeating the line it sounds real while the eggs vanished into his pockets and hands.
Dr. Hamilton Rice of Boston returns from his Orinoco expedition with geographic and ethnological data. He embarked at Manaos, Brazil, 1000 miles from the Amazon mouth, and began the journey in Caracas, Venezuela, this past January. He sent a cable to the Post on April 8 confirming safe arrival aboard the Madeireuse.
Dr Rice traced the source of the Rio Negro and explored the Ven ezuelan forests with two companions and guides. He crossed the Andes to the Amazon watershed and surveyed the coast of the ancient Amazonian Sea, challenging existing maps and signaling a new chart of the rubber rich wilderness.
In Everett on May 1 burglars struck for the sixth time in a week, visiting W. A. Hinckley at 59 Lexington Street. The family left at 8 and returned at 9 to find the house looted and lit, with $400 in jewelry and silver taken. The robbers used skeleton keys.
The young Boston millionaire Byron D. Chandler closed Red Hill Farm for an indefinite absence. His wife, Mrs. Chandler, has lived in New York for six weeks and is not expected to accompany him. Chandler's past includes a famous European jaunt, a 1906 marriage to Fostelle the chorus girl, and a Cambridge court case over obstructing an electric car that led to license revocation.

William Kissard, 385 Washington Street Roxbury, was found dying last night by Patrolman Casey in Merrimac square. He likely fell or was struck by a passing vehicle. He suffered a fractured skull. Joseph O'Riorden third son of the late Patrick O'Riorden of Charlestown and heir to a large fortune wed secretly Easter Sunday night to Mary McAuliffe of Charlestown. The mother bitterly opposed the match and has been prostrated at her Monument square home since the announcement. The bride worked in a city department store and lived on Pleasant street, Charlestown.
The newlyweds Mr. O Riorden and Miss McAuliffe are said to be on their honeymoon at Lexington Inn. Officials report no parish record of the ceremony at St Mary’s. families refuse to disclose where the marriage occurred. Neighbors recall prior friendship and opposition from the groom’s mother.
Forecast for New England calls for fair weather in the south with showers in the north this weekend. East New York will have fair coastal conditions with interior showers Saturday and Sunday, followed by west winds at night.
