Boston records show 963 places licensed this year, down from 974. Several licenses not reissued due to subway construction or finances. ten druggists denied for cocaine sales. sixteen denied for proximity to liquor dealers.
The Excise Board granted licenses in Dorchester despite a strong No vote at the last city election driven by clergy and temperance groups. The board cited cocaine sales and drugstore trade as factors, with 963 licenses issued overall and 11 held up for construction, finances, or conduct concerns.
Police Commissioner O Meara and John M Minton chair the listing board to enumerate all male residents of Boston aged 20 and over. Listing aims to finish in five or six days and may bar nonlisted citizens from voting.
Boston aims to rank among the world’s top opera centers with a new arrangement. The city will feature prominent stars of song, promising exciting prospects for the music-loving public.
The Metropolitan and Boston Opera companies signed an agreement to exchange star singers and operas. Each house will pursue a common repertoire, double new works heard in New York and Boston, and aim for an ensemble of top artists. Cooperation replaces competition to broaden offerings.

Captain William Welch of Tower No. 1, Driver Walter Martin, Captain Henry Avery of Steamer 1, Ladderman Shaw of Company 1, and Patrolman Connolly were overcome by smoke. Mrs Hayman of 64 Church Street, an invalid, was rescued with difficulty by police after the Lynn fire.
Three brave men rushed through flames to close iron doors at J. B. Blood & Co. grocery store, confining the fire to the Blood block. Lynn firemen and helpers from Saugus, Swampscott and nearby towns fought to prevent spread to crowded tenements as high winds carried embers toward homes.
A fierce fire began in the Blood block shipping room and spread to upper store rooms. Lynn and nearby towns helped as flames roared from every window and three local heroes Avery Connelly and Martin rushed to close the doors to protect adjacent wooden dwellings and annexes.
The district option bill was defeated for a second time yesterday in the House and is disposed of until next year.
Four delegates at large to the Republican national convention were elected in Portland Maine with instructions not to bind their votes. The Maine Republican convention adopted a resolution declaring William H Taft of Ohio as their choice for President.
The Maryland Republican convention selected General Felix Agnus of the American, William P. Jackson of Wicomico County, and Representatives Pearce and Mudd as delegates at large to the national convention. It adopted a resolution endorsing Secretary of War Taft for the presidency and directing the delegates to pursue his nomination by all honorable means.
In San Francisco on April 30 Abe Attell stopped Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan in the fourth round predicting easy victory. Sullivan appeared dazed and passive as Attell pummeled him before police halted the bout, deeming it one sided and ill treated.
Bowerman hits a go ahead home run in the ninth to lift Boston Americans past the New York Nationals 8 2. Rain halts play after two innings in a Boston versus New York contest. Harvard loses 2 0 to Maine in Cambridge.
In Baltimore during a zoo show seven leopards were unleashed into the arena causing panic. A boy, Louis Long, was badly clawed while Police Sergeant Barranger closed exits, keeping crowds from stampede as leopards were recaptured and returned to cages.
A Boston and Maine Southern Division train from Woburn to Towell halted at North Billerica after a danger signal, just moments from plunging into the river as the halted engine avoided a fatal fall. Passengers narrowly escaped death in the early hours after midnight.
Patrick Lennox, 82, poor immigrant, faces bankruptcy over $2,027,550 debts tied to P. Lennox & Co. of Lynn. He claims he handed the business to his son James T. Lennox and cannot be held accountable.
An old man fights for his name and fortune as he testifies from a sick bed to save his assets from creditors. Judge Dodge must set aside findings by bankruptcy referee William Perry to prevent Lennox from returning to poverty from 70 years ago when he arrived as a friendless immigrant child.
Two white masked robbers boarded the Pennsylvania New York and St Louis express at Union Station in Pittsburgh and fled with four sealed currency bags near Walkers Station. The train, among the road's fastest, usually carries large sums from New York to western points. The messenger could not identify the robbers. The theft is described as one of the boldest in the area.
A Grove Hall electric car collided with McCrillis express team near 1234 Washington St injuring three, one fatally. The runaway horse bolted through traffic to Massachusetts Ave before capture as McLean Saunders and Reisert were treated at City Hospital. Conductor Arthur H. Porter and car 316 were involved.
Nora T Connolly of Roxbury was to wed Thomas Henry this month but died after an illness and operation. Her father of Brookline Avenue, John's Brookline home, fell ill with pneumonia and head trouble from worry, dying after escorting her to hospital. Funeral services were held at St Mary's Church.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for rain on Friday with colder air. Saturday should be fair and warmer with brisk winds shifting from easterly to westerly. In Washington on April 30 the New England forecast predicts rain or snow and colder air Friday, then improving by Saturday with milder south and west portions.
