Public Grounds Flower Beds Debate in Boston Letter

A Boston reader urges simpler flower bed designs for the Public Garden ahead of next summer’s Grand Army encampment. He favors pruning and replacing aging trees on the Common over elaborate displays, arguing many trees should be preserved or replaced for future generations. He notes the Tremont street mail area as a symbol of neglected trees and hopes hospital like care may occur after the encampment. He also mentions upcoming gatherings of florists and cemetery superintendents that could influence bedding and landscaping choices.
