City of Paris Safe at Queenstown After Peril Aboard
The missing steamship City of Paris was spoken off Crookhaven and anchored in Queenstown Harbor after a catastrophic engine-room failure caused a dangerous leak. Ballard Smith's account details passengers life on board, heroic calm, and the ship's slow, secured return to port with all souls aboard reported well.
City of Paris Survives Major Atlantic Engine Breakage
At Queenstown the Inman Line steamer City of Paris and its tow, Aldersgate, arrived with report of a serious accident 216 miles west of Fastnet. The starboard engine failed, water flooded engine rooms, yet no one was injured. Passengers remained calm, a £600 Mariners Institute fund was raised, and crews used hand pumps and buckets to save the ship. The vessel is beached for temporary repairs before possible tow to Liverpool.
