Newfoundland Herring Shipment Leads Waterfront News
A large cargo of Newfoundland frozen herring arrived at the Fish Pier aboard the Judique from Port aux Basques. Captain John Day delivered 20,000 pounds for T. M. Nicholson of Bucksport after an 11 day voyage amid ice. Other vessels reported 30,000 pounds haddock and 25,000 pounds cod on the Mary DeCosta and 6,000 pounds cod plus 50 pounds pollock on the Christie Cox. Wholesale haddock prices ranged 8 1 2 to 5 cents per pound with other fish at 3 to 8 cents. The Egremont Castle, from the Orient, completed a 20,000 mile world voyage under Captain J. Cann, fueling an expected coal strike impact as dealers stock up. Coal ships from Norfolk and Jersey ports brought 5,500 tons soft coal and 10,000 tons anthracite, with more Virginia vessels en route. The coastguard cutter Seneca reported drifting near a large iceberg during ice patrol. Laden with 23,000 bags of raw sugar, the Managut arrived from the Orient.
