A dated general command document discusses Germany and the United States, noting Berlin seeks outward friendliness to avoid open war. Washington views European pressure as a potential path to avert conflict, while submarine ruthlessness drives cautious diplomacy.
In Portsmouth New Hampshire on March 22 Miss Ethel Stanton a 22 year old Cincinnati socialite and her 18 year old companion Miss Margaret Spalding shot themselves in a restaurant booth after hours of talking. They left a note directing their bodies to be buried together. Spalding daughter of George F Spalding of Newton Centre and connected to Newton High School, later a dancing and gymnastic teacher. Spalding’s father a Boston wooden ware manufacturer at 43 South Street.
An American expeditionary force of 100000 to fight in France under Theodore Roosevelt has been organized and financed by wealthy New York citizens. A large number of the force is to sail from a neutral port aboard standard oil tanker Healtton, torpedoed by a German submarine off the Dutch coast with several injured. Roosevelt will head the army as supreme commander with Colonel in supreme command role.
Police traced two young women who arrived at Rockingham register noting Chicago as home. They left a note at the inn showing no clear cause for their deaths. After a hearty supper the pair discussed for a long time before the shooting just before eleven.
British and French official communications report the German retreat slowing and preparations to stand and fight along the front in France. In the Somme to Oise sector German attacks on the east bank of the St. Quentin canal were repelled by French machine guns and artillery. Further assaults near La Fere and between Laon road and the Aisne were broken up by French barrages.
London reports German stiffening on the southern Arras to west of St Quentin front with limited Allied gains by the French along the Ailette. Berlin claims favorable engagements on both sides of the Somme and Oise. In the Vilna region on the Russian front, Germans advance east of Lida, taking 22½ Russians and several guns before territory is retaken. Galician attacks near Brody are repulsed.
London March 22 In the House of Commons tonight a debate on Sir James Henry Dalziel's resolution urged a new attempt to settle the Irish difficulty Andrew Bonar Law announced the government had decided to make such an attempt The Dalziel motion was voted down
The Nationaliste, having voiced its stance earlier, did not take part in the debate. The gathering showed a broad wish for a settlement among Unionist and Literal speakers, with the sole exception of Lord Hugh.
Lieutenant Governor Coolidge likened today’s struggle to the 1898 Cuba fight and warned Europe’s despotism meddles with inalienable rights. He urged defending privileges with blood and money, stressing that privileges worth anything must be defended at the Old South Meeting House at a City History Club event.
Eight officers and engineers aboard the Standard Oil tanker Healdton, sunk off Terschelling by a submarine, are Americans. Twenty crew drowned, others rescued in exhausted condition by a Dutch torpedo boat. The ship, built 1908, carried 2,137,711 gallons of refined petroleum from Philadelphia to Rotterdam. The incident fuels calls for broader U S actions as Congress plans a special session for April 2.
A Reuters dispatch from Ymuiden reports the steam trawler Java arrived with 18 Healdton crew members. The Healdton, un warned, was shot into flames by a German submarine in the so called safe zone. Of the crew of 4 probably 19 were drowned owing to a sloop capsizing. Two others who jumped also were drowned. The Healdton was bound for Rotterdam via Bergen with 6000 tons of petroleum.
Washington March 22 The State Department said the United States would grant full recognition to the new Russian government once conditions are met. Officials indicated Ambassador Francis had officially welcomed the regime, breaking a period of silence at the department as press despatches reported the move.
Petrograd reports the United States becomes the first nation to recognize the new Russian government. Ambassador Francis made a preliminary call on Foreign Minister Milakoff, then visited the Marinsky Palace with his staff to make a formal recognition.
A brief column notes anniversaries and past events including the capture of Filipino leader Aguinaldo and a reference to a U S House passage on army reorganization one year ago.
Washington dispatch notes southern New England will see fair and warmer conditions on Friday, followed by unsettled Saturday with rain. Moderate southerly winds expected, increasing through the period. Northern New England also forecast fair and warmer Friday with possible rain Saturday.
