Neponset Tragedy Claims Two Young Girls and Boy

Four year old Ernest Way attempted a rescue after his playmate Margaret Rideout fell from Pratt's wharf and drowned in shallow water. Margaret Rideout, three and a half, died in the incident while her playmate and dog Pat perished nearby. Ernest’s mother alerted nearby workers but the child could not be saved.

Tenebrae Services Draw Large Congregations Across Churches

Churches held Tenebrae services with large congregations last evening. At the Cathedral of the Holy Cross the cardinal led the 7:30 p.m. service and will celebrate pontifical Mass at 9 a.m. today. The Immaculate Conception, Blessed Sacrament, Roxbury, and St. Mary’s North End reported sizable audiences and choir performances totaling dozens of voices.

Forest Fire Threatens Homes on Gerrish Island

A blaze on Gerrish Island near Kittery Point Maine burned several acres of brush and timber this afternoon. It threatened summer homes of C F McClure of Boston Joseph Warren of Cambridge Colonel Scott of Burlington Iowa and Albert H Stickney of New York and drew in soldiers from the One Hundred Fifty sixth Company Coast Artillery and local fire crews to fight the fire starting on Fort Foster reservation.
