Massachusetts Iron and Steel Men Seek Tax Relief From Congress
A joint hearing at the Massachusetts State House examined a petition by iron and steel interests for a legislature backed expression to Congress. Petitioners urged tariff relief on pig iron and scrap iron and for free import of iron ore, coal, and coke, arguing current duties cripple New England mills and threaten regional industry. The session featured a quarrel between Colonel Albert Clarke and Gerard Tobey, with Tobey defending the plan and Clarke challenging the approach, while many manufacturers from both parties testified.
