A dynamite blast rocks the courthouse causing a tremor in the building. Police believe a stranger sparked the plan to destroy the structure. One victim is janitor Louis Zeilinger. another man is unidentified as authorities search for the assailant and assess threats received by the sheriff.
President Wilson orders mediation with four mediators to avert a railroad strike in New York as B. and A. workers prepare to quit. Some western employees refuse to obey the call for duty.
President appeals to rail workers to reopen talks with a council of defense prepared to seek accommodation. He warns that a general railway shutdown would threaten national safety and urges immediate action for peace and world security.
President Wilson today called railroad managers and heads of employees' brotherhoods patriots to reopen the questions at issue and prevent a general strike or disruption. The appeal stressed patriotic duty and urged prompt, constructive talks to avert widespread stoppages.
Mayor Curley will announce steps at a morning conference to assure Boston hospitals and families of milk for babies and invalids in case a railroad strike is declared. He seeks action to prevent shortages and ensure essential welfare needs are met.

Thomas Fennessy, 52, nearly drowned last night after breaking through thin ice while crossing Leverett's Pond in the Back Bay Fens.
