Patrolman Samuel J. Sweetland escapes dismissal after a trial board finds a five minute lapse in judgment acceptable given eight years of service. Commissioner O'Mearaいて ordered 210 hours of punishment duty instead, noting his arrest of Sallie E Beck a well known school visitor and philanthropist for intoxication.
The commissioner's order reviews the incident at Hanover and Parmenter, where Miss Beck a home and school visitor claimed Patrolman Sweetland was indifferent. The trial board comprised Captains Evans Sullivan and Harriman. Miss Beck was charged with intoxication and later released after Sweetland apologized.
Professor Morris Hicky Morgan of Harvard College Greek department is gravely ill with heart disease at the Newport residence of Daniel Fearing. He came to rest two weeks ago seeking relief and his condition worsened with his life despaired of as Dr. Alexander J Anderson and nurses attend him.
Morris Medifsky aged 20 rushed into a blaze at 134 Brighton street West End yesterday afternoon to save two children of Mrs Rebecca Goldham on the third floor. He smashed a window and carried the children to safety as the fire caused by a 3 year old girl lighting a candle touched a lace curtain. Damage was slight.
Weston the pedestrian arrived at Great Bend at 9 p m completing his 36th mile for the day. He showed little fatigue after yesterday's 72 mile leg and has shed 20 pounds since starting. He is seven days ahead of his schedule.
A major fire at 74 78 Canal Street yesterday afternoon caused about 25000 in damage to furniture warehouses. Firemen were overcome by smoke while rescuing six women as thick smoke cut off escapes from upper floors.
Miss Anna Donovan and Miss Agnes Sweeney escape through a hole kicked in a glass wall after smoke and flames trap workers at the Boston Captain Company on the fourth floor. George W. Graves carries Sweeney to safety, others jump to the street. a bag worth over $500 is recovered by firemen.
Mrs. Herbert Bullen and two young children were saved from a Cambridge fire at 1124 Massachusetts Ave by Ladderman Hartner. More than twenty residents fled in night attire as the three story wooden lodging house suffered about 2500 in damage. Fire started behind, swept to the front, and spread upstairs with several lodgers trapped or weakened by smoke. Edwin Wheeler and Albert Bedard assisted others as a young woman was carried to safety from the third floor.
Cleveland March 15 The beet packers are charged directly with the high cost of meat in the report of the special grand jury called to investigate the high cost of living and which announced its findings today.

Colonel Roosevelt toured the historic spot where Charles Gordon fell to dervish spear attack as he recalled the 12 year old siege and Gordon’s death. He spoke of Kitchener’s relief expedition and funeral rites with vivid memory before witnesses at the palace esplanade.
Philadelphia officials say conferences with George H. Farle failed to produce a settlement plan for the car men's strike and negotiations are ended. The State Federation of Labor calls for a statewide sympathy strike vote and readiness to act.
Labor leaders report no change in the general strike as defections among strikers are offset by new accessions to their ranks.
George A. Crocker, millionaire club man and ex city treasurer, along with John J. Conroy and Charles H. Leach, were arrested by Inspectors McGarr and Armstrong on charges of conspiring to corrupt jurors in the Crocker will contest. They appeared before Judge Wait, waived indictment readings, and were released on bail. Bail for Crocker came from his brother Joseph B. Crocker and his uncle George G. Crocker. Conroy’s bondsman was James F. Jacobs and Mary J. Callagy, with Leach posting $2,000 cash bail.
Cambridge voters re-elected Mayor William F. Brooks on a Non-Partisan ticket defeating ex-Representative George W. Long by 1688. The Non-Partisans gained one alderman, while Democrats hold 7 to 4 on the board and 12 to 10 on the Common Council. Jeremiah F. Donovan won assessor. Frances Lee Whitman joined the School Board. James Vallely joined for one year. the city voted no license for the 24th straight year.
Springfield March 15 The first Hampden Senatorial district shifted to the Democrats as John F. Malley defeated Republican Theodore F. Dwight by 1115 votes in a special election to fill the late Thomas S. Walsh term.
In Lynn the 13th district Democratic Michael S. Keenan defeated Republican J. Fred Manning by 250 votes to fill the late Arthur Reed’s seat. In the 15th district Republican Horace H. Atherton beat Democrat Michael H. Potter by 114 votes, succeeding James A. Halliday who died last fall.
An advertisement asserts Father John's Medicine cures bronchitis asthma and catarrh. The copy emphasizes relief for respiratory ailments and promotes the medicine as a remedy.
District Attorney Joseph Pelletier and Assistant DA Thomas D. Lavelle announce 14 count indictments against George W. Crocker John J. Conroy and James Leach in a bribery and jury tampering conspiracy. The charges range from procuring a juror to concealing suspects and aiding Hartnett. Conroy Crocker Leach face additional counts as accessories. William D Turner lawyers Crocker Edward Creed for Conroy represented by real estate broker John J Conroy of Tremont street.
In Chicago on March 15 the danger of a strike by 27,000 locomotive firemen on Western railroads and possible layoffs of over 125,000 workers was averted through mediation accepted from federal authorities in Washington.
At the request of 47 Western railroads, Interstate Commerce Commission Chairman Knapp and Labor Commissioner Neill offered federal mediation to union officers. Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen President Carter accepted but demanded prompt action. The hour for a Monday strike was set, with mediators to Chicago to decide what issues are arbitrable. The dispute centers on wages, plus promotion and representation in the union.
Annie G Kennedy aged about 40, daughter of Thomas C Kennedy, vanished from her East Boston home in the Winthrop block. Police issued a general alarm to locate her. her father is a well known real estate dealer and auctioneer.
