An underground gas explosion at 4 50 yesterday afternoon in Somerville blew three man-hole covers along Highland avenue into the air, showering concrete and earth as a subterranean chamber vented gas. The blast was heard near Davis square, drawing hundreds to the scene.
No injuries reported though several houses along Highland avenue sustained damage from flying concrete and debris. Three nearby manholes blew simultaneously, one shattering a second story window at 82 Willow avenue, while curbings and road bed were displaced. Spectators saw a flame burst but no fire remained by arrival of street workers.
President Taft traveled toward Chicago for a Trish Fellowship Club banquet and spoke of preparing his speech on the History of Ireland and the Life of St Patrick. He denied Irish lineage, joked about kissing the Blarney stone, and noted plans to attend a Chicago ball game with Pittsburg. He also referenced Wagener as a notable Dutchman in the crowds.
Valeria Stanbon, a widow living at 1977 Dorchester Avenue Dorchester, was found dead in her room yesterday afternoon. She had long suffered from heart trouble. She was the daughter of Daniel D. Willard of Portland Missouri, reputed as the oldest sea captain on the Atlantic coast. She had no children.
United States Senator John Warwick Daniel of Virginia is on the point of death in Daytona Florida. He has been unconscious for 48 hours and doctors report his condition critical.
Irene LaBlanc, 19, sister of Hattie LaBlanc, testified at the East Cambridge Probate Court that on the Sunday before the murder Mrs. Glover called her husband a fool with a profane adjective. She added Mrs. Glover made faces and thumbed her nose at her husband during supper while the LaBlanc girls were present.
A woman on the stand wore a plain irregular face lit by girl like smiles as she answered. part of the time she seemed bashful and unaware, with the narrative continuing on Page 2 Third Column.
King Edward reports a relapse and worsened throat condition in Biarritz on March 16. He has not left his room since yesterday and remains frail at 68, though he continues walks and hunting trips, despite doctors forbidding smoking big cigars earlier.
South Boston lit up with decorations for the 134th anniversary celebration of the British evacuation. Thousands arrive to glimpse General Isaac R. Oldfield launches from a standing start and finishes in 40 53-100 seconds, beating Hemmery’s 41 28-100 at Brookfields in England. Dr Warner timed both runs for the American Automobile Association as Ralph De Palma sits out with a broken piston. A surveyor’s certificate precedes formal board acceptance placing Oldfield’s record in history.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on March 16 the Boston Red Sox, using many substitutes, outplayed the Cincinnati Reds 7 to 2. Manager Clark Griffith faces questions as regulars return to trim the lineup. The Reds hoped for an easy win but were outpaced and outplayed at every stage.
The Reds finally dented the plate in the last inning after eight scoreless frames. Cincinnati managed four hits and two runs as Barberich faltered, preventing a shutout and turning a stalled game into a scoring burst. Continued on Page 12-First
