Auto surtaxes debated in Massachusetts legislature
A legislative committee heard a bill by Executive Manager Henry B Endicott to impose one year surtaxes on automobiles to fund war needs. Senator Gifford supported the plan proposing $5 to $10 per car plus smaller fees for motorcycles and trucks. Real estate interest George H Washburn urged broader and longer lasting taxes. Car dealers and auto interests opposed the tax citing heavy burdens. A sub committee will draft the bill for full committee review.
