In Albany on March 13 Edith Melcher, a young widow, faced murder charges in the death of her 4 year old son. Her defense lawyer John H. Dugan urged insanity as the verdict, tears appearing among jurors and spectators as the address unfolded.
A man denounces a defenceless woman at a bar calling her mindless and claims she should be sent to an asylum for merciful confinement. The exchange portrays a violent gendered accusation in a public setting.
Margaret Callahan, three, of Madison avenue Quincy, was severely burned when her dress caught fire near a bonfire. Her mother, Mrs. John Callahan, rushed out and smothered the flames with her own dress, saving the child though both their clothing burned. The girl did not survive.
Mrs. Charles W. Morse in New York expresses cautious optimism over reports from Washington that her husband may be pardoned or have his sentence commuted. The banker, sentenced to 15 years in Atlanta, has been in prison for 14 months as his wife campaigns for his release, gathering signatures and meeting influential figures.
Governor Foss announced the appointment of Clinton H. Scovell Harvey S. Chase and Charles L. Harpham as the State Fin Com experts to audit finances. The three Boston auditing professionals will conduct the inquiry and Foss spent the day discussing the plan with them.

Patrick B. Doyle, 52, a veteran Kenny & Clark driver, died at Massachusetts General Hospital after a Belt Line trolley crashed into his hack as he was leaving the stable. Motorman Michael Denney and Conductor Franklin Belanges operated the departing car, injuring Doyle and damaging the hack.
Gabriel Rosenthal of Dorchester now New York married Claire McCain in City Hall. He receives weekly payments until age 30, then about 25000 from his late father’s will. Jacob Rosenthal, prominent Boston figure, left 80000 and led a Jewish charity before his suicide.
Washington reports a shift in the Mexico crisis as the United States begins withdrawing warships from Mexican harbors while Mexico signals nervousness over the 20 000 troops mobilized on the border. Mexican officials and citizens react to the mobilization and U S troop withdrawals.
