A major Lynn fire gutted the Valpey and Anthony Shoe Company block on Central Avenue, with flames leaping to upper floors and prompting help from Swampscott. The six story structure was a total loss, with Brophy Brothers Shoe Company stock damaged and several machines at risk. Loss estimated at 40 to 50 thousand dollars. Fireman George Middleton injured after a ladder fall.
Special to the Post reports a man named Joseph Massey shot Mary Victoria Lafave, then killed himself with a gunshot as police and witnesses watched. Lafave, 18, is gravely wounded and not expected to survive. Massey, about 20, died on the snow. The motive cited is un requited love, with no further investigations pursued.
Mary Lafave, a devout church member, was shot thrice by Massey at the corner of Hancock and Elm while returning from 8 o'clock mass. He fled toward Bigelow street, then shot himself behind the ear, dying as police arrived. Mary, injured in multiple sites, is not expected to recover. Massey had stalked and pursued her despite her discouraging advances. The incident occurred near the Miller estate, and the victim worked at T. A. Wicher & Co. shoe factory.
Fire in the burned district yesterday left three dead, Harry Turner, William Meadowcraft, and Lewis Redpath, with two missing feared dead. William Downey of Ludlow Manufacturing described his escape during the Ames building fire. Downey and coworker Lewis Cotton aided with fire buckets, battled heat, and aided Chief Egan on the Brown Durrell roof before retreating to safety as flames intensified.
