Forty two are known dead and more than 125 injured after a tornado struck Newcastle Indiana this afternoon. The storm sliced a two block wide path from Sixth to Twenty Fifth Street, leveling about 100 houses and damaging over 300. The south side school, rolling mills and shovel plant were destroyed.
A western to southeastern storm devastated Newcastle hitting the Maxwell factory area and a main residence district. One block south of Broad street suffered heavy wreckage while the Interurban power house failure plunged the city into darkness. Hospitals were filled with injured and troops were requested to guard wrecked homes from looters.
A violent storm near Hagerstown, Indiana killed two children of Ernest Graves as a brick house collapsed. Ora Smith, a local farmer, was lifted about 100 feet by the wind and dropped into a pond, breaking his back and facing probable death. Reports to Richmond were sparse as the storm crippled wire service communications. No damage was reported in Richmond itself.

London reports Bagdad, once the caliphate’s capital, has fallen to British troops. The official press bureau announced the capitulation this evening after a telegram from General Maude said Bagdad was occupied early today. No further details accompanied the message.
An official report details operations against Bagdad up to Saturday morning. British troops crossed the Diala under moonlight on the night of the 8th and established a post on the right bank. They moved a detachment along the Tigris, found the enemy southwest of Bagdad, then drove them rearward. On the night of the 9th a Diala crossing allowed a further four mile advance toward Bagdad.
Firemen trying to enter a Congress street building to battle an early morning blaze were repelled by high voltage found in steel girders shutters and water spouts. A fireman was knocked from a ladder and fell unconscious after striking a charged shutter, while three colleagues were hurled across the street after contacting the building’s charged front.
A six story brick building at 275 28 Congress street housing C S Stern Shoe Company was damaged by a blaze that sprinkled water inside to hold flames while firefighters risked electrocution. Investigators believe grounded electricity charged metal in the structure though causes remain undetermined. Fire loss estimated at 200 dollars. Ladderman Daniel S Crowley injured, fractures heel, hospitalized. Fire Prevention Commissioner O Keefe to continue inquiry.
A fatal duel in Hyde Park leaves one man dead after revolver use. An officer is struck twice by the assailant’s shots before the weapon is seized and the suspect taken into custody.
One man, Rocco Santos, 42, of 11 Wilton Street Hyde Park, is dead after a duel in front of John Quinn's grocery at West Glenwood and Hyde Park avenues at 9 45 last night. Patrolman Frank H Shepherd of the Hyde Park police station is hospitalized at City Hospital with bullets in the abdomen and right breast. A fourth shot Santos fired at Shepherd missed.
Pasquale Frangi reported trouble at Palma's house prompting Officer Shepherd to pursue Rocco Santos. Near West Glenwood, Santos resisted, drew a pistol and fired four times as Shepherd drew his gun. The officer fired once, wounding Santos who collapsed.
The executive council of the American Federation of Labor completed a general statement on organized labor's attitude toward national defence problems. It will be presented tomorrow to a conference of more than 100 labor leaders for ratification.
