Sugary Swindle Hits National Sugarine Stockholders
The National Sugarine Refining Company formed in 1887 faced a elaborate swindle by William C. Hickman. He promised a revolutionary sugar substitute, charged $22,000 for machinery, and swindled about $30,000 before fleeing to Canada. Hickman claimed a dying sailor revealed the secret, tested by Dr. Bowker, who certified the mix as harmless.
