Cutter Saves Craft in Peril

A three masted schooner, J Manchester Haynes, capt Rixon, was towed into port by revenue cutter Onondaga after a violent storm. Bound from Jacksonville to Boston with lumber, the vessel took on water and lost deckload. Crew lived on deck for two days before rescue off Cape Lookout.

Railroad Telegraphers Expect Grant Concession

Fire in West End Lodging House Sparks Suspicion

A mysterious incendiary blaze at 79 Charles Street West End struck the lodging house run by Lawrence Barron. Chief Fox reported fires on the third, fourth and fifth floors and in mattresses with $800 damage. Police were alerted for immediate investigation after kerosene odor and carpet evidence.
