Senate to hold a record noon vote on Gore bill amid heated debate. Democratic Leader Stone repudiates the President while Lodge defends Wilson and Senator Gore accuses the President of suggesting war might not be a bad thing. The President issues an absolute denial.
Albert Roper, son of a murdered Tewksbury florist, was taken into custody in Lowell. He is jailed and to be arraigned tomorrow morning on no formal charge yet, held on suspicion by state officer Thomas Eustis and Constable Farmer.
Robert H. Kemp of Brockton testifies in Suffolk Superior Court that he lost a $4000 life insurance payout, about $360 of his savings, and $1000 borrowed from his father in law in a phony pool room at the Hotel Essex on October 31 or November 1, 1913. He seeks recovery from lessees Hammond & Co under a state statute, with limited proof about payments to occupants of Rooms 380-382 on the hotel’s ninth floor until the management’s knowledge of gambling use can be shown.
Francis X. Tyrell chairman of the State Board of Economy and Efficiency was elected president of the Chelsea branch of the League to Enforce Peace at a Chelsea City Hall meeting attended by over 100 citizens. Alfred Anderson was chosen secretary.

Alexander Graham Bell born in 1847. George Dewey named admiral in 1999. A year ago China and Japan extended a lease on ports at Tainy and Port Arthur for 99 years.

Mrs. Arthur Stickney of St Louis rushed from backstage of a society play’s dress rehearsal in St Louis when flames and cries caused a panic. She, daughter of Mr and Mrs Guy W Currier of 389 Commonwealth Avenue Boston, ran into a stage box as the theatre filled with frightened guests.
Occupants wrapped curtains around Mrs. Stickney to extinguish flames after she brushed an electric switch, starting a short circuit. She suffered severe burns to both arms, back, and legs and was treated at the theatre before returning home. She is described as the wife of a wealthy tobacconist and golf player of national fame.
A March 2 blaze in the Providence Journal office caused about 2000 in damage after a small explosion. the fire started near the managing editor’s room where newspaper files were kept. No one was in the room within two hours prior. The Journal has been active against German propaganda and pro Allies in its editorials.
London announces a proclamation to draft married men aged 19 to 27, effective April 7. The measure, reported March 3, sets the stage for conscription during the ongoing national emergency.
German forces renewed heavy assaults after a brief lull pushing giant guns toward the front north and northeast of Verdun. The French midnight report says these offensives were repulsed with German lines decimated by French fire near Fort Douaumont. Continued on Page 4 First Column.
Bart S Smallley rural mail carrier aged 49 and his wife, 47, were killed when their car skidded on an ice covered highway and was struck by a Maine Central passenger train near Georges River flag station in Thomaston Maine. Four children survive.

Senator Lodge and Williams back the President while New England senators largely support him. Lansing reiterates U S stance on armed merchantmen as defensive until provoked.
Washington reports from Ambassador Gerard say Berlin circles news that Congress opposes the President five to one in the present crisis Officials say Berlin is misinformed and the State Department seeks to correct the impression
Secretary Lansing indicated that the United States cannot accept Germany’s claim that submarines deserve special immunity due to fragility. He stated the U S position on merchant defensive armament holds that a merchant ship with cargo and non combatants is presumed armed defensively until it acts offensively.
In Washington on March 2 supporters of the President expect his submarine warfare policy to pass in both chambers. Senate leadership plans a vote to table the Gore resolution urging Americans away from armed merchant vessels, likely defeating it 3 to 1. In the House, the fate of McLemore’s warning resolution hinges on committee action and possible rule-driven maneuvering.
