Democratic leaders are warned no compromise will be tolerated. All negotiations with Germany halted until Congress acts. Revolters gain influence and threaten to repudiate the president's policy as Washington seethes with excitement.
A coal fed blaze began at 10 50 last night along 1000 feet of the Cambridge riverfront threatening the factory district. Boston and Somerville aided the effort to save gasometers of the Cambridge Gas Company as nearly a dozen buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. Firemen, aided by citizens, held the flames by 2 am.
Fire tore through coal sheds of the Cambridge Gaslight Company containing 7000 tons of coal and coal pockets of the Bay State Fuel Company with about 2500 tons. Mead-Morrison Company shops and Mead-Morrison main factory suffered damage. Fire also damaged a four story apartment at 93 Main Street owned by Raymond Smith and multiple other local businesses including John J. Shea & Sons cut glass, Sweatt & Gould monument works, and a carbonizing plant for gas.
A German seaplane bombed southeast England injuring no military targets but killing a child. The attack was confirmed by an official statement issued in London on March 1.
Governor McCall urged Boston businessmen to unite for a 1920 world's fair marking the Pilgrim landing 300th anniversary. He said the postwar era offers a unique opportune moment for an international exposition to foster commercial concord after Europe’s conflict ends.
The Governor's remarks on national defense echoed by other speakers at the dinner, with emphasis on New England industrial readiness for the postwar expansion and the big business prospects expected in the region.
Nearly 4000 granite workers at Quincy and other New England quarries walked off amid wage dispute with manufacturers. About 2500 quit in Quincy, over 1000 at Rockport, and more than 200 at Milford New Hampshire. Operations suspended and 4000 ancillary workers laid off.
Rotterdam dispatch to the Daily Mail reports the German Emperor left the Verdun front and returned to Germany on Tuesday, signaling a possible shift in wartime posture.
In Verdun the German bombardments press west of the Meuse with attacks along the Ma lancourt Forges corridor and toward Vaux and Damloup. The major infantry push appears paused for the moment, with Berlin and Paris reports lacking a clear restart. Lens notes British forces push 30 to 40 miles toward Amiens while Russia conducts isolated bombardments and air raids. Italy holds Marmolada as Italian fronts see only artillery activity elsewhere in the region and Caucasus and Persia operations continue.
Unofficial Berlin reports say the German plan centers on bombardment of chosen sectors to seize positions near Verdun. East of Verdun around Pont a Mousson French bombardments target Le Pretre wood and Thaicourt while Alsace artillery duels continue. No major French resumption in Champagne.
New England city comptroller John Cabell asks Mayor Childs to cut his $5200 annual salary to $3000. The mayor includes funds for the comptroller to keep his usual pay in the budget, declining the reduction.
In Washington Wilson plans to appeal for support of his peace with honor policy as a Congress revolt grows led by Speaker Clark and chairmen Stone and Flood. Reports say a joint House Senate conference may be called to steer clear of Congress, and Wilson may decline renomination if his foreign policy is undermined. Negotiations with Germany on the Lusitania and submarine warfare are stalled pending Congress’s action.
President Wilson serves notice to Congress that he will consent to nothing less than two recorded votes on anti administration resolutions in both Senate and House. The aims include warning Americans against armed ships of European belligerents. Continued on Page 7 Fourth Column.
Mayor Curley urged Massachusetts Congressmen to back President Wilson's submarine policy. He said no local Democrat or any Congressman should vote against the plan, calling for united support across party lines. He stressed duty to support the President on this issue.
The Lowell homicide report says Albert Roper of Tewksbury Centre was found with a blunt force blow to the head in his greenhouse. Robbery is suspected as pockets were turned inside out after last seen at 9 pm. a wreath had been sent to his home a week earlier amid a false death report.
In Fitchburg on March 1 Edith W. Terrell donated a pint of blood by transfusion to save her mother Mrs. Elwin W. Terrell at Burbank Hospital. The mother had been seriously ill for over a month and rallied immediately after the operation.
