Paris reports the French auxiliary cruiser Provence was sunk by a submarine in the Mediterranean on February 26. Nearly 3300 lives were lost, with about 4000 aboard and only 696 saved. The disaster surpasses the Titanic for fatalities in a single wreck, though Provence’s sinking is counted as wartime loss. The crew survived.
Six men perished as a northeast blizzard drove a coal barge ashore on Smith Rock off Minot and three miles below Minot's Light, Scituate. An unidentified man died aboard as rescued. The tug and two other barges, with 15 to 20 crew, are imperilled as they ride toward Collemore's Ledge.

Butler Bert Cutting, employed at Dr. Frederick M Spaulding's Brookline home, fought a desperate daytime robber yesterday afternoon. Cutting felled the intruder with a club, leaving him unconscious while the thief carried loot to the stairs. A Spaulding child first spotted the man as he descended.
Cutting, hearing a child's cries, chased a burglar from a lower floor room as he descended stairs. He grappled the intruder in the hall, and they tumbled through the hallway into the dining room before fighting toward the kitchen.
