Potent Works by Symphony with Debussy and MacDowell
The Boston Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Muck offered a strong concert in Symphony Hall with Debussy La Mer, Dukas Sorcerer’s Apprentice, MacDowell Indian Suite, and Goldmark Spring overture. Debussy drew praise for its delicacy while critics noted aging in Dukas and freshness in MacDowell, calling La Mer a masterful but enigmatic achievement. The performance by the orchestra was highly praised as virtuoso and imaginatively read, while MacDowell’s suite was hailed as a uniquely American reverie and a rare relic of its era.
