Samuel S. Pierce, a wealthy Bostonian and holder of a large interest in the S. S. Pierce Company, serves as an army aviator with the Allies in the Balkans. He bears his grandfather’s name and is actively engaged in the war effort.
Word reached here yesterday of 26 year old Pierce, who left Paris for danger and hardship to fly in the Balkan war. He conducted daring reconnaissances of Turkish lines before the armistice and reportedly helped drop bombs into Adrianople, earning high praise from Bulgarian officers and shocking friends who knew him only as a leisure aviator.
New York Feb 27 James C McReynolds special assistant to the Attorney General who handles the government’s suit against the anthracite combination has been selected by President Wilson for the position of Attorney General according to despatches from Washington
Mr. McReynolds declined to say if he had been offered the U.S. Attorney General post or whether he would accept. He called the office the biggest in law and said the governor must select his Cabinet in his own way. He noted the position’s importance under President Wilson and recalled prosecuting the Tobacco Trust case. He is a bachelor from Elkton Kentucky and classmate of Oscar Underwood.
Cecilia McCall of 34 Ainsworth Street West Roxbury was held up on Walsworth Street last night and robbed of 250 dollars from her purse. The thief escaped along nearby railroad tracks as a party of men and police scoured the area for clues but found none.
Senator John J. McDevitt of Quincy admitted he told the truth as he knew it after alleging an attempt to bribe him. The joint committee on rules ordered a legislative investigation and will summon McDevitt to appear this afternoon to obtain information not secured yesterday.
In Salem on February 27 a jury declared Dorr guilty of murder in the first degree. The foreman voiced the verdict, a pallid prisoner watched from the cage, and the judge thanked jurors before adjourning. The condemned man was led away to the electric chair.
Senator McDevitt maintains an attempted bribe of 300 dollars occurred but cannot recall the conspirator or the subject of the offer. In a rules committee session he said the offer lacked authority, noting he thought the man was a representative because he wore no hat. McDevitt, a first term Democrat from a GOP district, defeated Roger Walcott. He spoke with Senator Mack of North Adams before the hearing.
Vice-President-elect Marshall declared he would spend his last dollar for an American citizen's life but would not spill blood to save an American citizen's dollar as he discussed the Mexican situation in Philadelphia.
President Taft commuted the five year jail term of Harold B. Faxon for embezzling 7300 from the People's National Bank of Roxbury and ordered his release. Faxon was arrested in Goldfield Nevada after seven years sought by Boston authorities. He is about 38, formerly of Quincy, linked to Dr William L Faxon and Henry H Faxon relations.
John Farley, 35, attempted to rescue a friend he believed sleeping in a top floor room of a brick building at 14 Green Street, West End, owned by A. C. Hammond. He was overcome by smoke and was rescued by firemen after Fire Captain Shallow found him. Separate blaze reported at 60 Phillips Street nearby. The Green Street fire began on the third floor from an unknown cause. Farley worked at Hammond's restaurant on the first floor.
In Trenton, Mr. Marshall cautions that defining a cause for U S intervention in Mexico is uncertain amid rumors of a syndicate and border violence. He attributes Mexico’s troubles to a missing middle class and notes President-elect Wilson’s cabinet talks. Mrs. Marshall criticizes suffragists and urges focus on domestic reform before women's political involvement.
Salvatore Longo was sentenced to two years in the federal penitentiary at Atlanta by Judge Morton in the United States District Court yesterday for engaging in the white slave traffic.
International officers of the Ladies' Garment Workers' Union and local union leaders decide on a general strike affecting about 9000 shirtwaist cloak and dress makers. The plan was set after a conference in the city with President Abraham Rosenberg and Vice President Abe Mitchell present.
A committee of 400 girls will distribute strike circulars starting at 6 am with help from fifty Cloak Makers Union men. The report notes many of the girls were continuing their activities, with more details continued on page four, third column.
Henry Wentworth, 25, of 586 Walnut Street Lynng, was arrested on a manslaughter charge after shooting Charles Videto, 35, of 55 Wyman Street. Videto died when he attempted to force entry to the Walnut Street residence.
Videto attacked a Reading street, smashing car windows and threatening residents before forcing entry at the Wentworth home. John Wentworth fired, firing shotgun blasts and bullets as Videto broke windows. Videto died at Lynn Hospital from chest wounds.

Early this morning a mail car bound for Malden crashed into the rear of a Melrose trolley car in Glendale square Everett. Three people were injured, one perhaps seriously, as the crowded Melrose car took the impact.
Albert E. Howard of Malden, Charles N. Polep of Everett, and Fred Reynolds of Stoneham were injured when a Melrose car bound for Boston derailed near Glendale Square. The trolley struck a mail car on the adjacent track, throwing both off the rails. the Melrose vestibule was shattered and Reynolds is thought to have internal injuries.
Six thousand railroad tickets valued at $475 were found in a room once occupied by John Johnson behind Dr. James F. March’s apartments at Hotel Dunbar Roxbury near Dudley and Washington streets. The tickets were alleged stolen from Mt Bowdoin station of the New York New Haven Hartford line two weeks earlier.
The Commonwealth versus William A. Dorr concludes as a jury convicts Dorr of first degree murder in the killing of George E. Marsh, a retired Lynn businessman. Prosecutors detailed the case, witnesses, and exhibits while defense argued self defense and lack of jurisdiction.
