Washington June 26 The National lottery machinery will be set in motion again tomorrow to draw order numbers for 744 500 men who came of age during the year ending June 5, the first anniversary of the selective draft. Secretary Baker will draw the master number at 9 30 am in the Senate office building room used last July 20. Provost Marshal General crowder officials will proceed to complete the drawing by noon.
Thompson was elected last evening to succeed Dr. Franklin B. Dyer as superintendent of schools.
Frank V. Thompson of Brighton will be the next superintendent of the Boston schools at a salary of 10000 dollars a year. He was elected last evening by a 3 to 2 vote with Judge Michael H. Sullivan casting the deciding ballot on the second ballot. The special meeting at the Mason street building ran from 4 PM to 11 PM. Those voting for Thompson were Henry Abrahams Miss Frances G Curtis and Judge Sullivan. Corcoran and Lane stuck with Assistant Superintendent Burke.
In the first ballot Judge Sullivan voted for Assistant Superintendent Rafter then switched to Mr. Thompson. Details continued on Page 10 Fourth Column.
Basel reports a Berlin rumor that Dr. Richard von Kuehlmann the German foreign secretary will resign his portfolio. The notice is unconfirmed and attributed to sources in Berlin.
American troops on the Marne front attacked in Belleau wood last night and cleared a German-occupied strip. The hand to hand fighting yielded 264 German prisoners.
After a 13hour American artillery barrage the assault broke into Belleau Wood. German prisoners praised the Americans as they fought with ferocity, and investigators found hidden machine guns set behind large boulders and in sunken roadways.
Paris officials vote to rename Avenue Trocadero in honor of President Wilson and pledge name plates by July Fourth. The unanimous council acclamation suspends a rule against living-person street naming, pending formal public approval.
Mrs William Cumming Story, former president general of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a national women's club figure, was arrested in New York on indictments charging grand larceny petty larceny and conspiracy in the National Emergency Relief Society affairs.
