A Stockholm despatch to National Tidende says Russian Red Guards attacked the former emperor Nicholas Romanoff in Ekaterinburg and killed him. Austrians escape only at terrific cost to their troops.
Italian forces cleared western Piave River rear guards and held the river front from Montello to the sea. Pursuit of retreating Austrians continued as heavy casualties were inflicted. A Piave rise damaged pontoon bridges hindering rapid Italian advance as General Diaz weighed new tactics.
Washington reports a new call for 243 436 men to assemble for military service July 22 to 25. Draft class 1 will be exhausted by August 1 as registrants aged 21 between June 5 1917 and June 5 1918 receive numbers by lot. New England quotas include Camp Devens and Camp Up ton with totals by state. Senate debates extending ages 18 to 45 or 20 to 40 on an army appropriation bill.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin said he visited the American embassy in London and presented to Ambassador Page the address of the anti conscription conference for President Wilson.
