Only those necessary to preserve life and property will be employed at the yard Monday as Congress has not passed the fiscal year appropriation beginning July 1. The layoff affects about 1500 workers at the facility.
Navy yard staff face layoffs as 1500 of 2000 workers may be turned out while others take promissory notes for wages awaiting Congress action on naval and civil appropriations. Since 1879 such strain has risen. payments depend on future congressional decisions and potential executive signature.
George W. Perkins, key Progressive leader and Roosevelt backer, echoed that the party is the people’s and will rule as he left Chicago for the campaign. The remarks signal strong momentum for Roosevelt’s third party bid.
Henry W. Taft on June 25 said his brother would likely receive a second term. He added that a third party would not weaken the President's support. The Tafts will sail aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II and be abroad through September.
In an operating room with the thermometer at 90 degrees, Miss Annie Collins of 35 Carver Street was saved by an 18 year old cousin Miss Ethel McCluskey in a blood transfusion at Grace Hospital on Kingston Street yesterday. The procedure, led by Dr. Harry Germain, chief surgeon, was doubly hard due to heat and Miss Collins’ frail condition but completed successfully.
Miss McCluskey, 18, risked her life giving more than a quart of blood during a transfusion. Four electric fans cooled the operating tables to keep both subjects from succumbing to the high temperature.
In New York on June 25, waiters and hotel staff ended their prolonged strike. A meeting led by an International Hotel Workers' Union representative heard a report from 80 canvassers in major hotels, noting favorable conditions for resuming work. The almost unanimous vote among 2800 employees authorized the return to work.

Francis J. Heney of California and Charles R. Crane of Chicago met with William Jennings Bryan in his Baltimore apartment for about forty five minutes. The purpose and details remained undisclosed as the trio departed by private elevator before the visit became public.
