June 24 Carl Hamilton, an instructor at the United States Army Aviation School in College Park Maryland, was perhaps fatally injured when an aeroplane collapsed in a fall.
Hamilton, flying solo in a bi plane at about 100 feet, crashed to the ground and was pinned under the wreckage. Signal corps men at the school freed him quickly and he was rushed to a hospital where doctors fear his injuries may prove fatal.
The City Council refused an appropriation to expand Long Island almshouse housing. Dr Charles E Donlan superintendent, said reports of inadequate inmate care were not current but winter overcrowding with 1025 people present showed need for more space. He noted full capacity and limited room despite beds.
The conference of negro ministers of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Rush Memorial Zion Church in New York concluded. Leaders emphasized expanding educational facilities as the key solution to the negro problem.
The continuation of the heat wave across Boston brings great suffering in crowded tenements with prostrations widespread. Forecast calls for fair weather today but unsettled conditions may bring rain Wednesday. One man, Elmer T. Morgan, 52, dies after falling 30 feet during heat exposure. Giuseppi Gugliano, 19, suffers a broken arm. Continued on Page 5-First Column.
Elmer T Morgan aged 52 fell 35 feet during construction at Dunster road Jamaica Plain and died at City Hospital. Joseph Lannon collapsed at South station and was taken to Relief Hospital. Amos Munson, George Evans, Carrie Jaynes, Oliver Milscom, Harriet Curtis, Giuseppi Gugliano and H B Miller are listed as collapsed or overcome at various city locations with several treated at Relief Hospital or Cambridge Relief Hospital.
Bert Lane, about 50, shot George Spencer a boarder in He S About 45, then killed himself as the sheriff arrived. Spencer’s death was witnessed by Lane’s 9 year old son who said the shooting appeared accidental. Sheriff Mooers cited possible insanity. Lane left a wife and four children. Spencer left a widow and three children.
The signal service reports a Norwegian ship en route to Green Bay was driven by ice to Labrador and ashore at Battle Harbor. attempts to identify the wrecked vessel are underway via wireless communication from Battle Harbor.
Parker L. Eaton aged one of Woburn’s oldest Civil War veterans died at the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea yesterday. Post 161 member. Funeral services set from the First Baptist Church Woburn Wednesday at 2 30 PM with interment at Woodbrook.
The Democratic national committee elected Judge Alton B. Parker as permanent chairman in Baltimore on June 24 signaling a conservative push to back Oscar S. Underwood for President. Parker won 31 votes to 20 for Ollie James and 2 for Senator O'Gorman, yielding Bryan a first round setback.
