Mayor Fitzgerald attacks Police Commissioner O Meara in a written statement calling out interference with police control. He warns that the commissioner talks too much and could lose effectiveness. O Meara replies, insisting the power rests with the police, not the mayor. Page 8.
Fairweather will continue for Tuesday and Wednesday with light winds and moderate temperatures. Localized morning fog may reduce visibilities near coastal areas. No significant precipitation is expected through midweek.
Sharon residents led by Mrs. George A Dennett and Mrs. Mary E Hixon petition Chief Joseph E Shaw asking State police to investigate and close kitchens barrooms alleged to corrupt youth. Selectmen and constables defend limited authority while local fires and rowdy behavior are cited as harm.
Yale officials moved to curb Bottle Night chaos with a rule limiting housing for freshmen on Temple Street. After July 1, 1907, no more than three students may share a house along that street, and any complaint next year could force students to withdraw and relocate.
Frank J. Gethro, expelled from the House, plans to sit in the gallery and read names of allegedly bribed members if the bribery hearing is not reopened. The House shows no plan to summon him or reopen the inquiry, and any gallery name reading would be promptly suppressed. He is likely to be accompanied by Thomas W. Lawson and counsel Daniel H. Coakley.
House leaders avoid reopening the bribery investigation citing Gethro’s confession and say it should be left to District Attorney Moran. Prominent figures debate whether Gethro should testify publicly and whether the House has power to summon him. Barnes questions authorship of the confession and backs Moran taking action.
In Worcester on June 25, Robert L. Hunter, 21, is jailed after being accused of stabbing Charles La Crosse, 215 Summer Street, to death. La Crosse, dying, said Hunter stabbed him. Hunter reportedly told police he feared guilt.

New York June 25 Stanford White eminent architect of McKim Mead White firm was shot and killed by Harry Thaw a member of the Pittsburg family during the musical extravaganza Mariselle Champagne on the roof. Thaw was arrested immediately after the shooting and the motive cited is trouble over Thaw’s wife Evelyn Nesbit. The Madison Square Roof Garden crowd witnessed the fatal event as shots rang out and White collapsed at his table.
Governor Guild urges the Legislature to pass an anti merger law to keep foreign control from Massachusetts street railways. Hearings begin this morning before the railroads committee as leaders aim for a bill draft this week and possible passage before week’s end.
Fayette S. Curtis, second vice president of the New York, New Haven and Hartford, denies any deal to keep control of the Boston and Worcester trolley lines by the New Haven road. He told a Post reporter there was no arrangement about strategic purchase or control of the lines.
Collins' boys suffer a 1-0 defeat to Athletics while Brooklyn shuts out the Nationals 2-0. Worcester rises to second in the New England league as Colby edges Bowdoin. Amherst dominates Williams 7-0 after three losses. Colby also beats Bowdoin, Maine’s interscholastic baseball title ends 6-0, and Vermont elects a nine captain. Yankees win a tennis opening in England as Yale visits Harvard. White team sweeps Round Robin polo. Brockton police curb boxing after a dispute. Robson defeats Murphy. Beals Wright loses Anger amputated.
A shooting at a theatre left patrons panicked as an assailant fired three shots at Mr. White after declaring “Youve deserved this.” A fireman blocked the final bullet. Evelyn Nesbit, seated with White, aided the attacker who was later identified as Harry Thaw through letters found on him.
