Thirty passengers were hurt in a head on collision of two street cars near the Grafton town line in Worcester at 6 p m. Thirteen were seriously injured and needed medical help before going home. Officials could not fix responsibility and both crews blamed misprinted orders while railroad officials denied the claim.
A double streetcar crash east of the Grafton Worcester line near Hilton farm left Motorman Elmer Lackey with a broken leg and severe scalp wounds. Conductor James W. Torpey rode Bonny Brook bound car. Worcester bound car was heavier and bore the brunt of damage. Police will investigate the incident as traffic was halted for about an hour.
In New York on Mott Street a bomb was placed before an altar in the On Leong Tong meeting room on the fourth floor. The explosion damaged the floor and walls, shattered windows, and injured no one. A 5000 year old Chinese god on the altar was toppled. Police seek the culprit.
United States Senator Henry Cabot Lodge declares support for the Republican ticket in the coming campaign and warns that a Democratic victory would harm business prosperity. He issued the statement from Nahant on the national Republican convention results.
The speaker advocates renominating President Taft, praises Republican traditions and policies, and warns that a Democratic victory would harm the economy and government. He pledges support for the party, aims for unity, and calls for malice toward none and charity to all in the campaign.
Seven year old Lillian Brown of 138 Coleridge Street Orient Heights East Boston slipped from a motor boat. Her hair entangled in the engine, a portion was torn from the roots. Her right ear was mangled and she suffered multiple cuts and bruises. Recovery expected.
Eight Italian sailors were killed when a barge carrying an old shell exploded while being set to sea. The incident occurred at Tripoli as the crew attempted to sink the shell.
Henry S. Baker 55, a retired cotton merchant and brother of Clifton P. Baker, shot himself on the Charles River Esplanade at about 8 30 yesterday morning. He had been despondent over ill health and lived in Boston the past two years. A passerby, 13 year old Ethel Griefman, heard the shot near the Union Boat Club.
The steam collier Malden of the New England Coal and Coke Company arrived from Baltimore and, after docking, its firemen walked off the job. This marks the third affected collier, with organizer Alexander Morgan saying the firemen will strike on the collier Everett when it arrives today.
An excursion dock at Eagle Park Grand Island collapsed under crowd weight on June 23. Over 100 people were thrown into the Niagara River. Seven bodies recovered and between 15 and 20 are reported drowned.
Buffalo outing by Court Amherst Lodge 232 S O F of Black Rock ended in disaster when underpinning on the dock failed as 350 to 400 boaters prepared to board the Henry Koerber. People were hurled into the Niagara River. Communication to Eagle Park hotel owner’s wife reported the first news. phone outages blocked later updates.
In Chicago on June 23 the Progressive party formed with about 500 attendees. Governor Hiram Johnson was empowered to name a seven member committee to confer with Theodore Roosevelt and plan action. Roosevelt's managers to announce a venue and date soon for the party’s formal nomination, with a Chicago convention likely in early August.
National committeemen in Roosevelt’s “inner circle” were told to bolt tomorrow and join the fold. A Republican organization meeting is expected to show 12 absent or nonvoting members of 53. Leaders deem the new party well equipped, but say individuals who backed Roosevelt must speak for themselves.
Col William Jennings Bryan arrives in the convention city amid a heated Democratic scene. Reported that he fears the conservatives may seize control of the upcoming convention and that he would bolt if they prevail, potentially aligning with the Roosevelt faction to oppose both old parties.
Jeannette Ferguson wins batting challenge as Post selects the 1912 All Star school boy baseball team amid a high scoring game where Baltimore defeats the Sox 14 to 8.
