Vienna rejection of Keilley shocks Washington readers
Washington reports astonishment at Vienna's refusal to receive Mr Keilley as United States minister to Austria. The ground seems tied to his wife’s Jewish religion, a social obstacle not affecting policy. Reilly has already closed Richmond business and faces uncertain future. Eugene Schuyler’s omission from Bayard’s Scotland mission draws comment. Richard Henry Stoddard seeks Glasgow posting as Bret Harte’s successor.
