Matters of Commerce Shows Strong Demand for Light Fabrics
The past week saw a market surge in light weight summer fabrics with most wash fabrics selling freely and many lines sold out of jobbers at full prices. Mills introduce pew and stylish novelties that sell quickly as tissues muslins and challies approach sellout levels. The print cloth market holds to last week’s 3% advance with no spot goods available, supply tight. Providence weekly sales hit 68,000 pieces and Fall River production reached 200,000, all covered by deliveries. Strong cloth demand boosts printed goods, with fall price lists likely higher than last season as light prints near exhaustion. Gingham demand remains solid and deliveries are fairly free as spring and summer clothing ends in a brisk retail rush. Fall lines near delivery and jobbers prep to hit the road soon. Woollens in men’s wear show lean orders for a month, but clothier stocks are light and the coming season looks bright.
