Battle over omnibus bill splits West End lease from subway plan
In a heated Legislature battle the omnibus bill likely splits into two, separating the West End lease from subway construction. Supporters led by Public Franchise League Chamber of Commerce and the Governor push immediate action on the subway portion while the West End merger may wait. The Senate shows favorable sentiment, but House opposition and Governor's objections loom. The struggle includes substitute bills by Senator Tinkham proposing a 2 year subway lease and a 7 percent merger offer. The West End seeks 8 percent in a merger while the current rate offers 7.5 percent. Amid the political clash activists foresee a protracted fight to pass the bill in its current or altered form. Meanwhile the Sacred Heart Church Convent cornerstone was laid in East Boston with about 2000 attendees. The ceremony featured vespers, benediction, and a procession of Sacred Heart School students. A copper box with church records and photos was placed under the cornerstone.
