New York June 18 The defence in the Gould separation suit kept focusing on Dustin Farnum the actor whose image appears in the case as a central figure. Servants and attendants testified that Mrs Gould was often seen drinking and when intoxicated became irritable and quarrelsome in her conduct.
The valet claimed he served Mrs Gould two quarts of Manhattan cocktails in two days besides wines and liqueurs. Clarence J. Shearn pressed witnesses to reveal grudges or debts to Mr Gould. John H. Kimball, an oil and paint dealer, testified he had known Gould 18 years and attended a performance.
Three Boston firemen from Engine 7 and Ladder 17 were injured when a 45 foot ladder collapsed during a fire at the Old Colony stables on Dorchester Avenue. Captain Jeremiah Gillen suffered severe contusions and two broken ribs, Ladderman Daniel McAlvin broke his right arm and sprained a leg, Hoseman Patrick Ryan broke a leg. Melvin Dailey of South Boston suffered a severe wrist cut. The blaze damaged 38 horses and caused about 30000 dollars in losses.
The fire spread to the I C Batchelder Coal Company pocket and Crowley Brothers blacksmith shop at 44 46 Dorchester avenue but was put out with slight damage to both. Injured firefighters include Captain Jeremiah Gillen Engine 7 at 56 Saratoga street East Boston David McAlvin Ladder 17 of 144 Lenox street and Patrick Ryan Engine 7 of 269 Summer street East Boston. Gillen suffered severe contusions and two broken ribs McAlvin broke his right arm injured left wrist and sprained right leg Ryan broke his right leg Melvin P Dailey of Broadway South Boston was cut after being kicked while rescuing horses.
