Train wreck at Coon River kills two and injures many

A Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul train was derailed near Coon River by a misplaced tie on a trestle. The wreck threw cars into the river. two people were killed and many injured. Express Messenger Olderverd is missing. Several passengers and crew were pinned under timbers and rescued. A separate C&O line crash at Balcony Falls left Engineer Lane and Fireman Clements dead.

President Sidney Dillon returned from a four week inspection tour covering over 8000 miles. He said physical condition is excellent but there are many damaged cars and engines from prior overtaxing, with $200000 planned for repairs and expenses to reduce operating costs to about 62 percent if traffic proves strong. Dillon noted irrigation in the West has transformed deserts into gardens and claimed credit for building more railroad mileage than any contemporary.

In broad daylight yesterday a masked highwayman halted the Wenatchia stage twenty five miles from Ellensburg Washington. The robber forced the driver to dump out the mail bags and compelled the passenger to rip them open, taking eight registered packages. The sheriff and posse pursue the suspect.
