War on Canal Boats as Railroads Seek Grain Trade Dominance
Chcago June 17 The Canal Forwarders Association and the canal boatmen pool responded to Lehigh Valley rate cuts from Buffalo to New York by lowering canal rates on wheat and corn a quarter cent and oats an eighth. For the week canal and rail shipments from Buffalo were nearly equal. The canal pool remains intact despite railroad pressure, with about 200 boats at Buffalo.
