In dense fog sixty miles west of Whitefish Point the steamers North Star and Charles J. Sheffield collided. The Sheffield sank in eight minutes after being struck forward of the stack. all aboard were saved and sent to Cleveland. The North Star sustained a damaged bow but remained afloat due to a collision bulkhead. the Sheffield was valued at $125,000 and owned in Cleveland.
New York June 17. The denial of the reported capture of Port au Prince by Hippolyte is confirmed by Johannes M Haustedt Hippolyte's representative. Haustedt says Hippolyte is within a few miles with his army but has yet to attempt to take the city. A move onPort au Prince is expected soon.

Ottawa directs government cruisers to seize vessels guilty of fishery law violations. Stricter instructions come as mackerel runs draw Atlantic fleets, with the American schooner Mattie Winship seized and later freed after bonds totaling $8000 were posted.
In VineYard Haven on June 17 a body recovered from the harbor is identified by papers found on the person. The receipts are from Rockland Maine to Thomas Abbott dated May 6 1887 Nov 16 1887 Nov 26 1887 and October 1887. The man is believed to be the same Thomas F Abbott who fled from Captain Clark of the schooner Elbridge Gerry at the port on the morning of the 9th, while temporarily insane.
St Louis June 17 Frank L Woodruff late assistant postmaster at Lawrence Kan arrested on charge of embezzling between 5000 and 6000 dollars from the money order department of that office He was placed under 5000 dollar bond.
Charleston June 17 In the Court of General Sessions today the grand jury returned a true bill against Dr T B McDow for the murder of Captain F W Dawson in March last McDow was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Next Monday June 24 was fixed for his trial.
