Brakes No Good on Springfield Express Wreck

Stamford, Conn. June 16 Coroner Phelan opened an inquiry into the New Haven railroad wreck of the Springfield express last Thursday. The railroad book entry dated June 10 by Engineer Charles J. Doherty stated brakes on engine No 1338 were no good. Doherty testified that Travelling Engineer J F Carroll told him gauge cocks on No 1338 were out of order and brakes did not hold. John H Dillon, brother in law of Doherty, charged a witness waited for direction from Attorney B I Spock of the New Haven railroad before answering a coroner's question.

He could not speak for several moments due to the enthusiastic reception from thousands gathered in Monument Square.
