Pigeons Stolen from Rail Yard May Be European Hatches
Railroad officials suspect theft of carrier pigeons found in a small shabby basket. Each bird bears welded leg bands with foreign marks. Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals handed the birds to Elmer R. B. Chapman, a leading pigeon expert, for value estimation and leg-band identification. He said the birds are likely European and valuable, probably from a ship or vessel, and would attempt to fly home if released, risking death if the home is far away. The birds have specialized diets of peas and wheat and would fail on ordinary pigeon fare.
