A whale struck a fast moving steamer causing a sudden jolt and reducing speed by more than half. Passengers appeared in night robes on deck and gathered at the rails to witness the sea monster's thrashing of the waves.
In Bangor Maine on June 11 three Costigan men Harry Shirland 17 Harry Pelkey 27 and Colbert Curtis 23 drowned when their canoe capsized on Sunkhasse Stream above Oldtown during a Sunday fishing trip. The overturned craft was found with a man clutching a knife and a plug of tobacco.
John Nawn of Roxbury died at 86 after 58 years as coachman on the Williams estate Townsend street. He served the Williams family for decades and was pensioned by John and David Williams. Burial is planned for Wednesday at St. John’s Church with family representatives attending. he is survived by three unmarried sisters.
James D Casey of Brookline a leading Boston businessman died at City Hospital soon after falling ill while with the Ninth Regiment en route to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross to honor Colonel Hanley. Born in Waltham he led Casey & Hanley Brewers and held directorships at Massachusetts Brewing United States Trust Puritan Trust Chelsea Trust and memberships in Boston Athletic Assn Boston Yacht Club and Country Club. Survived by widow Catherine nee Coan and four children Ellen Alice Edmund and John. Funeral plans announced.
Lexington June 11 Dr Harry C Gleason of Boston and J F Anderson of Brookline with Jesse E F Ames of Allston were badly hurt when their auto swerved into an embankment on the State road tonight. The car flipped over after first ejecting the occupants. Dr Gleason was probably fatally injured.
Jesse E. Ames owner of the car and chauffeur Anderson dodged two racing autos two miles west of Lexington. The touring car climbed an embankment to pass, then flipped over after a wheel struck a stone. Dr. Gleason was seriously injured and taken to Copps Hospital Somerville. Ames and Anderson suffered injuries but were sent home.
Prince, a horse owned by G. F. Adams of Allston, broke from its halter last night and climbed to the hay loft. This morning the stableman found Prince missing from his stall, then discovered the horse with head in the feed box after overhead noises drew him up the stairs. A carpenter removed the stairway obstruction and Prince was led back downstairs.
In Farmington Maine a forest grave opened to reveal the mangled remains of Mrs Etta Taylor 41 who had been missing for three weeks Her husband Marshall Taylor a known guide and his housekeeper Gida Searles were taken to the county jail after the discovery Searles had served a prior jail sentence for a statutory offense.
A coroner to hold an inquest at Strong tomorrow at nine. Mrs. Taylor has been missing three weeks as her husband Taylor denies search efforts. Remains found near the railroad suggest a three week to month burial with a head wound possibly from a gunshot or axe blow. The home search found no weapon while neighbors recall a prior plan to hire a housekeeper via lawyer Richards and Mrs. Searles.

Masked men armed with blackjacks tried two highway robberies in Roxbury's Elm Hill area early yesterday. They struck at Victor Arronson a Blue Hill avenue provision dealer as he drove a wagon near Harold and Homestead streets. He beat them off and escaped unharmed.
Within minutes of Arronson's assault, liquor dealer Joseph Simon of 45 Endicott Street was struck from behind with a blackjack at 63 Hollander Street Roxbury. He fought back, wounding one assailant with a black masked attacker fleeing. Police link the two incidents and Arronson used a heavy whip to drive off his attackers.
In Haverhill on June 11 nineteen year old Ethel Blanche Smith learns her father James F Smith and Henry Batchelder drowned when their fishing boat capsized at Johnston s Pond. Smith s body was found while Batchelder s fate remained undetermined as search efforts continued. Both men were shoe workers leaving families.
Minnie Robbins aged 13 and Manley Robbins aged 10 died after their self fashioned boat capsized on Goose River in Belfast Maine. The tragedy occurred while they were paddling on the water and the details continued on page 2.
