The Senate approved by 64 to 24 a resolution to amend the Constitution to elect senators by direct popular vote. The Bristow amendment granting federal supervision of such elections passed 44 to 44 with the Vice President casting the deciding vote. The House had already adopted the resolution.
Senator Reed protested against the vice president casting the deciding vote. The Bristow amendment to bar federal supervision of elections unless State Legislatures act was defeated 46 to 48. The amended resolution passed 64 to 24 as Borah led the measure with Bacon opposing. Davis of Arkansas condemned Bristow while Cummins denied an Arkansas claim as untrue.
Marshall Taylor of Freeman, held in the county jail after the discovery of his wife’s body, confessed to killing her with a shotgun on May 12 near their Taylor home in Farmington Maine. He says motive was intense hatred and led her to a predug grave where he fired a fatal shot as the sun set. He faces arraignment on murder charges.
Chicago June 12 Johnny Kling did not board his car due to salary differences with Boston management, according to President Russell. Kling reportedly received a telegram from Vice-President L. Continued on Page 13 Third Column.
The plan calls for new subways to South Station Dorchester South Boston West End and Back Bay at a cost over 15 million. Passenger fares would stay at a nickel while right of way costs rise to 2 million per mile from 50 thousand. Profits are unlikely for many years with rental costs over 600 thousand annually. State Railway Commissioners and Transit Commissions were tasked by the last Legislature to review the proposal.
Lynn June 12. Dr Edward V Bray is arrested on charges of forging the name of Dr James A Keown president and house physician of Emergency Hospital to a drug order. Keown says Bray left unpaid bills and signed hospital names to orders. Bray admits signing Keown’s name to obtain drugs to replenish hospital stock.
A fierce electrical storm swept the Atlantic coast last night killing 15 in Virginia and three in Philadelphia. It damaged ships, uprooted trees, broke wires, and caused fires across multiple towns before fading near Massachusetts.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts at the White House says reciprocity will pass the Senate. He notes the Root amendment may or may not succeed but the agreement remains effective. He has dropped a proposed fishermen protection amendment for his state.
Washington June 12 The House committee on sugar trust affairs demands answers from Edwin F Atkins acting president of the American Sugar Refining Company about efforts to acquire the Pennsylvania Sugar Refining Company. Atkins notes that 10 000 of 18 000 New England owners are women and that stockholders include guardians churches orphanages and hospitals, mostly in New England.
Ellen Prince of East Boston refuses to claim the body of May Dolliver Prince who died in Philadelphia. She asserts the girl poisoned her own daughter and favors using the body for medical dissection. Prince recounts adopting the girl, disputes her death cause, and says she will not be involved in burial.
Fred J. Snow testifies at Essex County Superior Criminal Court that he bribed Lawrence officials including Patrick Lyons and Michael Flynn to secure a lucrative paving contract. He details payments of 1000, 250, and 100, plus a 4351.60 city check, and describes schemes to inflate work and profits.
In a testimony, Mr. Atkins recounts that about two years ago New England investors united to take control of the American Sugar Refining Company. He notes Havemeyer held 2000 shares at his death, with a $200 000 stake of a $90 million firm. Atkins says 63 percent of stock was held by New Englanders, with 18 000 New England owners including 10 000 women, and lists board members who now represent the majority. He recalls opposing beet sugar expansion and resigning substantial stock.
